Motion to Adopt a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Policy Statement and to Confirm Appointments to an Ad Hoc Committee as Recommended by Mayor Fulk.




BACKGROUND

This agenda item is the outcome of a discussion at the Special Called City Council Meeting for Strategic Planning on January 23, 2021, where City Council discussed a framework for furthering the community dialog on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. The City Council have indicated a desire to proceed with that framework by 1. Adopting a Policy Statement on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; 2. Confirming the Mayor's Ad Hoc Committee on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; and 3. Outlining the Charges to the Committee.

 

1. Policy Statement. 

 

The Allen City Council supports a community where respect for and openness to all exists and everyone feels welcome, included, treated equally and where their participation is appreciated. We value the rich diversity that makes up the fabric of Allen and remain committed to building on the shared values that reach across our entire community.

 

2. Mayor's Ad Hoc Committee on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

3. Charges of the Ad Hoc Committee on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

 

  • Research community "best practices" for enhancing diversity, equity and inclusion for Allen and consider their application for Allen community.
  • Research partnership opportunities that may provide additional opportunities to advance DEI in our community.
  • Determine the need for a permanent board focused on opportunities to promote unity in the Community.
  • Prepare and deliver a comprehensive report for the City Council, including a detailed proposed action plan, for their consideration to include a timeline and priorities on each action proposed.
  • Conclude by November and deliver report to Council at the November 23, 2021, Council Meeting.

STAFF RECOMMENDATION

Staff supports the City Council's Motion to Adopt a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Policy Statement and to Confirm Appointments to an Ad Hoc Committee as Recommended by Mayor Fulk.
