Since the adoption of the Consolidated Alternative Transportation / Recreational Trail Plan in 2001, the City has witnessed significant growth of its trail network, on both public and private lands. This network has become one of the community's favorite amenities in that it provides opportunities for passive recreation, as well as means of alternative transportation. Our trails link parks, neighborhoods, schools, businesses, commercial districts and other key city destinations, and in doing so enhance the quality of life for Allen residents.
Allen's population has more than doubled since the adoption of the first trail master plan and the demand for such amenities has increased greatly as well. Trail design standards have evolved too, and the need for a new master plan was evident. The City contracted with Halff Associates to analyze the trail system and work with citizens, special interest groups and staff to develop the updated master plan that ensures trails continue to be planned, designed, constructed, and maintained based on best practices and in an orderly fashion. This updated plan serves as a stand-alone document intended to guide future trail planning and development.
