US 75 - Frontage Roads and Main Lanes

Earlier this year, the Code of Ordinances was changed to reflect a new speed limit of 70 mph for the main lanes on US 75.   The Texas Department of Transportation has now conducted a speed study along all segments of the frontage roads within our community, and they recommend revisions to several segments of frontage roads.  The attached graphic identifies how the proposed speed limits compare to the existing ones.  Staff has reviewed the proposed speed limits, requested refinements, and received positive response from TxDOT in regard to those staff comments.  For simplicity moving forward, since TxDOT has jurisdictional control of the US 75 corridor, staff is recommending a modification to the Code of Ordinances that will adopt speed limits as set forth in the Texas Transportation Code (i.e. adopted by the Texas Transportation Commission).

Chaparral Road, between Malone Road and FM 2551 (Angel Parkway)

Staff has recommended a speed limit of 40 mph based on the engineering and traffic investigation by the Director of Engineering who serves as the Traffic Engineer.

Staff anticipates no budgetary impact.  The Texas Department of Transportation will install new signage along the US75 service roads. The funds for the new signage on Chaparral Road are included in the traffic engineering operating budget.

Staff recommends that the City Council adopt an Ordinance amending the Code of Ordinances, Chapter 9, 'Motor Vehicles and Traffic', amending the maximum prima facie speed limit on US75 (Frontage Roads and Main Lanes) and Chaparral Road.
